Las Vegas – Leading fiscal watchdog, national conservative columnist, and financial policy expert Drew Johnson officially filed to run for Nevada State Treasurer, pledging to bring accountability, transparency, and strong financial stewardship to the office.

Johnson is widely known for his decades of work exposing government waste and advocating for taxpayers. Over the course of his career, his research and policy work have been credited with helping save taxpayers more than $60 billion by identifying waste, fraud, and abuse in government spending.

“Nevadans deserve a State Treasurer who safeguards their money with complete transparency and accountability,” Johnson said. “Families across our state work hard for every dollar they earn, and under my leadership, the Treasurer’s Office will protect those dollars and manage them responsibly.”

Johnson has spent more than 25 years working in public policy and government accountability. He previously served as a tax and budget policy analyst at the American Enterprise Institute and the National Taxpayers Union, and later founded the Tennessee Center for Policy Research, now known as the Beacon Center of Tennessee.

In 2024, President Donald J. Trump called Johnson “a tremendous America First candidate” and praised his “incredible record of success and strong support from his community.”

Johnson has also worked with national taxpayer watchdog organizations, including the Taxpayers Protection Alliance and the National Center for Public Policy Research, and has been a contributor and columnist at outlets such as Fox News, Newsmax, Townhall, and The Washington Times.

As State Treasurer, Johnson said his priorities would include protecting taxpayer funds, maintaining Nevada’s strong bond rating, expanding college savings programs, and promoting financial literacy education.

Las Vegas – Nevada State Treasurer Zach Conine’s decision to send a $2.1 billion “bill” to the federal government over tariffs is reckless political theater, and exactly the kind of partisan hackery that is unbefitting of an office meant to focus on safeguarding taxpayer dollars, not advancing political narratives.

“This isn’t how the government works,” said Drew Johnson. “You don’t get to make up a number, slap it on a letterhead, and pretend Nevada is owed a check. This is a stunt designed to generate headlines, not results.”

There is no legal authority allowing a state treasurer to invoice the federal government for broad, estimated economic impacts tied to federal policy. The Supreme Court ruling Conine has cited does not create a refund program, does not authorize states to demand repayment, and does not entitle Nevada to a single dollar.

“What Conine is doing is misleading the public,” Johnson added. “Nevadans should be insulted that their Treasurer thinks they’ll fall for this.”

Here’s the reality Conine won’t admit:

• No money is coming. There is no mechanism, approval process, or legal pathway for Nevada to collect this so-called $2.1 billion.
• It creates false hope. By framing this as money Nevada can ‘recoup,’ Conine is selling a fantasy to families already struggling with high costs.
• It injects partisanship where it doesn’t belong. The Treasurer’s office is supposed to be one of the most nonpartisan roles in state government. Turning it into a political messaging operation undermines public trust and invites chaos.
• It distracts from his actual job. Nevada needs a Treasurer focused on protecting state funds and managing risk, not auditioning for cable news.

“Instead of doing the hard work of responsibly managing Nevada’s finances, Zach Conine is chasing attention and pretending it’s leadership,” Johnson said. “As Nevada’s State Treasurer, I will shut down the political games and get back to the core mission: protecting and prudently managing every taxpayer dollar.”

Las Vegas – Jeff Carter, a little-known candidate for Nevada State Treasurer, launched a disturbing and deeply personal social-media attack against Sarah Johnson, the wife of Republican front-runner Drew Johnson. Carter mocked Sarah’s infertility, belittled her public service, and attempted to erase her leading role in protecting women’s sports in Nevada.

After Drew Johnson publicly expressed pride in his wife’s widely recognized work in defending Nevada’s female athletes, Carter lashed out online, declaring that Sarah and Drew “don’t have children” and therefore have no right to speak on women’s sports—using infertility as a political weapon.

“Like countless women in Nevada, I cannot have children. That reality alone has been exceptionally painful,” Sarah Johnson said. “But to see that turned into a cheap political attack is disgusting, demeaning, and completely disqualifying.”

“A man telling me I don’t qualify to speak because I don’t have children perfectly sums up this fight to keep men out of women’s sports,” said Sarah, a former varsity athlete. “I earned my place on the field—and I don’t need his permission to defend fairness. Men don’t get to decide when women’s voices count.”

Carter didn’t stop there. The recent Chicago transplant and part-time Minnesota resident who lost millions in his career as a failed Chicago Mercantile Exchange trader absurdly claimed that Sarah tried “to put herself at the center” of protecting women’s sports “when [she] isn’t a part of it at all,” even though she is widely recognized as the architect and a driving force behind “one of the biggest policy wins for Nevada conservatives in the past decade.”

Acting in a voluntary capacity, Sarah Johnson originated the concept for a statewide task force to protect women’s sports, recruited its leadership, and built the framework that was later adopted by Lieutenant Governor Stavros Anthony as the “Lieutenant Governor’s Task Force to Protect Women’s Sports.” As a result of that effort—championed by Anthony and led by Johnson—the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association prohibited biological males from competing in girls’ high-school sports.

At the same time, Sarah Johnson, a small business owner who earned her master’s degree from Vanderbilt University and previously worked at the National Federation of Independent Business, served as Director of the Nevada Office of Small Business Advocacy. In that role, she led efforts to reduce state and local licensing and regulatory burdens on entrepreneurs, earning widespread praise from small-business owners across Nevada.

Democratic legislators later defunded the office in political retaliation against Anthony and Johnson for their work defending women’s sports, costing Sarah Johnson and two other women their jobs.

Rather than condemning the retaliation against her, Carter sneered that Sarah was “claiming victimhood” and mocked her for losing her career for standing up for fairness and opportunity for girls. He dismissed her as “simply a staffer, not a leader”—a line that didn’t just belittle Sarah’s role as the director of a state agency, but revealed exactly how little he would value the more than 40 professionals who work in the Nevada Treasurer’s Office.

“My wife is widely admired throughout Nevada for her courage and leadership in protecting women’s sports and for her tireless work helping small business owners deal with the state’s maze of regulations,” Drew Johnson said. “Jeff Carter has done nothing for our state except attack a respected female leader and weaponize a woman’s infertility for political gain.”

Building upon his strong showing in Nevada’s highly competitive 3rd District in 2024, when he was one of America’s top-performing Republican congressional candidates in a Democrat district, Johnson is motivated to continue his fight for accountable and transparent government in the treasurer’s office.

Johnson and his wife, Sarah, later relocated to Nevada, where he has continued his work as a taxpayer advocate, fiscal policy analyst, and champion for liberty, while Sarah became a leading advocate of small business and entrepreneurship in the Silver State.

Throughout his career, Johnson has been credited with saving taxpayers more than $60 billion by exposing waste, fraud, and abuse of tax dollars, and working with lawmakers to make government more efficient.

Just last year, President Donald J. Trump called Johnson “a tremendous America First candidate” and applauded his “incredible record of success and strong support from his community.”
